ANTIGEN Flashcards
Any molecular structure that when introduced is capable of Antibody production
ANTIGEN
Responsible for the molecular weight of antigen
Note: Molecular weight is important determinant as to whether antigen is elicit
Carrier portion
specificity of antigen
Epitope or Determinant
Inherent ability of a substance to induce the specific immune response resulting in the formation of immune lymphocytes or antibodies
Immunogenicity
The immunogen must be recognized as foreign or non self to induce immune response
Foreigness
Antigens that belongs to the host
When it elicit immune response it is termed as “defective immune response/ autoimmune disorder”
Autoantigen
Derived from other members of the host/individual species
Common cause of transfusion associated reactions
Alloantigen
Derived from other species such as animals, plants and microorganisms
Can be detected inside the laboratory
Heteroantigen
These are Heteroantigens that exist in unrelated plants or animals
These antigens are either identical or closely related in structure
When this stimulate immune response antigen can interact with one another
Heterophile antigen
tissue transplant. Rich source of antigens
Graft
Derived from the px’s/individuals own body
Autograft
Derived from identical individual
Isograft/Syngraft
Derived from other individual/ Non-identical individual
Allograft
Derived from other species
Heterograft/Xenograft
The ability to react specifically with the antibody or cell that caused it to be produced
Epitope determines its specificity
ANTIGENICITY/SPECIFICITY
