Depression
Caused by a deficit of norepinephrine dopamine and serotonin (5HT)
3 classifications of antidepressants
TCA (tricyclic antidepressants)
MAOI- monoamine oxidase inhibitors
SSRI- selective seratonine reuptake inhibitor
TCA (tricyclic antidepressants)
decrease reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine into the nerves.
many meds in this classification *amitriptyline, clomipramine, imipramine, nortriptyline
CI- pregnancy, recent MI, SI, hx of seizures
AE- sedation, sleep disturbances, fatigue, hallucination, visual disturbances, weakness, anticholingeric effect
DD- cimetidine, fluoxetine, rantidine,=increased TCA levels
Oral anticoagulants

inhibits enzyme to break down NE, 5HT, and dopamine isocarboxazid Rarely used many drug- drug interactions many drug food interactions TYRAMINE
Tyramine
Found in a lot of foods
SSRI selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
works only on serotonin, newer with less side effects
fluoxetine
citalopram
*blocks reuptake of serotonin in synapse
*works with depression and anxiety
*individual responses
CI- pregnancy SI
AE- headache, drowsiness, insomnia, N & V, anxiety, dry mouth, anorexia, constipation, cough, rash, sexual dysfunction
D-D- MAOI TCA’s
NI- up to 4 weeks to see side effects, check for SI, pregnancy, nonpharmacological measures, no herbal, no st johns wart, no abrupt stopping
