Antidepressant drugs Flashcards
How do MAOIs work?
Inhibit MAO enzymes which breakdown noradrenaline, serotonin and dopamine
Name 3 MAOIs
Phenelzine
Selegiline
Tranylcypromine
Why should people on MAOIs not eat food high in tyramine?
May cause hypertensive crisis
Why should MAOIs not be used in combination with other antidepressants?
Increase serotonin levels to dangerous levels causing confusion, hypertension, tremor, coma and death
==> Neuropathic malignant syndrome
Name a Reversible MAO Type A Inhibitor (RIMA)
Moclobemide
What is the mechanism of action of tricyclics?
Inhibit re-uptake of noradrenaline and serotonin by blocking transporters responsible for the re-uptake
What is one of the major contraindications for tricyclics?
Patients with cardiovascular disease as they increase the risk of arrhythmias
Name 5 common tricyclics
Amitriptyline Clomipramine Lofepramine Imipramine Nortriptyline
Name a drug that is similar in action to tricyclics
Trazodone
What are the concerns with prescribing tricyclics?
Can be very dangerous in overdose so need to be careful how much is prescribed to patients with sucicidal ideation
What is the mechanism of action SSRIs?
Limit the reabsorption of serotonin (and NA and dopamine)
What is the major side effect of citalopram?
QT prolongation
Name 2 SNRIs
Duloxetine
Venlafaxine
Name an alpha 2 adrenoreceptor antagonist used as an anti-depressant
Mirtazapine
Name an antipsychotic that can be used as an antidepressant
Risperidone
Lithium
