Anticholenergic Drugs Flashcards
anticholinergic
drug that opposes the effects of acetylcholine at acetylcholine receptor sites
belladonna
a plant that contains atropine as an alkaloid; used to dilate the pupils as a fashion statement in the past; used in herbal medicine much as atropine is used today
cycloplegia
inability of the lens in the eye to accomodate to near vision, causing blurring and inability to see near objects
mydriasis
relaxation of the muscles around the pupil, leading to pupil dilation
parasympatholytic
lysing or preventing parasympathetic effects
Therapeutic Actions
competitively block the acetylcholine receptors at muscarinic cholinergic receptor sites that are responsible for mediating effects of parasympathetic postganglionic impulses. Some are specific to certain receptors and others generally depress the parasympathetic system
Indications
-decrease secretions prior to anesthesia
-to treat Parkinson’s
-to restore cardiac rate and BP after vagal stimulation during surgery
-relieve bradycardia
-relieve pylorospasm and hyperactive bowel
-to prevent motion sickness and vomiting
-relax biliary and ureteral colic
-relax bladder detrusor muscle and tighten sphincters
to control crying or laughing episodes in pts with brain injuries
-to relax uterine hypertonicity
-mgmt of peptic ulcer
-to control rhinorrhea associated with hay fever
-antidote for cholinergic drugs and for poisoning by certain mushrooms
-opthalmic agent to cause mydriasis or cycloplegia
