Antibody Antigen Testing Flashcards
What is immunodiagnostics
Detects protein or part of pathogen
How to culture viruses
Need to culture in living cell as they are obligate pathogens
What does an ELISA detect
Antigens or Antibodies
What is done to viruses before PCR and why
They must be reverse transcribed as they have an RNA genome
2 examples of animal-side tests to detect pathogen
Lateral flow
Latex Agglutination
What is detected by an Indirect ELISA
Test for antibodies
What is detected by sandwich ELISA
Detects antigen (IgM most useful)
What does IgM indicate
Active/ very recent infection
What type of hypersensitivity is used in TB tuberculin test
IV
How does interferon gamma test for TB work
take blood sample in heparin tube, challenge blood cells in test tubes with tuberculin from chickens and cows, if animal has been previously exposed the white blood cells with react by producing interferon gamma which you can measure
What is a latex agglutination test
The latex agglutination reaction is a variation on the clumping ability observed when a sample containing the specific antigen is mixed with an antibody coated on the surface of latex particles.
