Antibiotics Flashcards
Rifamycin
Inhibits DNA-dependant RNA synthesis by binding to prokaryotic RNA polymerase
Antinomycin
Bonds DNA at transcription initiation complex and stops elongation by RNA polymerase
Streptomycin
Affects initiation (30S subunit) and causes misreading of codons
Erythromycin
Bonds to 50S subunit and prevents translocation
Chloramphenicol
Inhibits peptidyl transferase by binding to 50S subunit
Tetracyclines
Inhibit binding of aminoacyl-tRNAs to the ribosome
Puromycin (affects eukaryotes too)
Causes premature chain termination during translation (pro & eukar.)
alpha-aminitin (actually a toxin)
Inhibits RNA polymerase II (deadly toxin)
Diphtheria toxin (not a drug)
Inhibits RNA translation by inactivating eukaryotic EF-2
