Antibiotics Flashcards
What is the MOA for Flucloxacillin?
-Penicillin’s prevent cross linkage of polymer chains.
- Does so by binding to penecillin binding proteins (pbp).
-These chains regulate bacterial cell division and protect the cell.
-If cell not protected, cell wall synthesis cannot take place.
-And further bacterial growth in prevented.
How does Flucloxacillin differ from other penicillins?
It cannot be broken down by penicillinase (like other penicillins), an enzyme that inactivates the antibiotic.
What is the dose of Flucloxacillin?
-Moderate infection: 1g 4x per day.
-30 mins before food.
-Max no. 28 doses over 7 days.
What are the side effects of Flucloxacillin?
-Nausea
-Vomiting
-Breathing difficultly
-Anaphylaxis
What drug interactions are there with Flucloxacillin?
Anticoagulants- Antibiotics alter INR.
Oestrogen- Antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of the pill.
What are the contraindications for Flucloxacillin?
-Hypersensitivity to Penicillin’s.
-Poor hepatic and renal function.
What is the MOA of Erythromcin?
-Blocks bacterial cell’s ability to make new proteins by binding to ribosomes responsible for protein synthesis.
-Blocking proteins= no chemical reactions can take place, meaning cells are unable to function.
-No new cells.
Erythromycin dose:
Moderate infection: 1g 4x per day.
With or without food.
Max. dose : 28 over a week.
Erythromycin side effects:
-Nausea/vomiting
-Stomach irritation
-Diarrhoea
-Colitis
- Rashes
-
What interactions are there with Erythromycin?
Anticoagulants: Macrolides increase conc. of anticoags in blood (increase blood toxicity).
Decreased effectiveness of contraceptive pill.
What are the contraindications for Erthromycin?
Hypersensitivity.
Hepatic and renal function.
