Tetracyclines

A

Bacteriostatic
Gm - & +
Doxycycline: STIs, rosacea, acne, resp tract infections, malaria prophylaxis
Minocycline: acne vulgaris, non-gonococcal urethritis, syphilis,
Tetracycline: adjunct in severe acne, rosacea
Avoid w/in 4 hrs of antacid

Beta-lactams

A

Bactericidal
Oral cephalosporins are used extensively in primary care
Ceftriaxone (Rocephin): most commonly used parenteral cephalosporin in primary care

1st gen - Cephalexin: skin (not caused my MRSA), impetigo
Pregnancy - UTI (if sensitive)
2nd gen - Cefuroxime: ENT - rhinosinusitis, otitis media
Lungs - CAP, exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
3rd gen - Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) IM, cefixime: STDs: Gonorrhea, PID
Renal: pyelonephritis
