Treatment for neonate with sepsis
ampicillin and cefotaxime or gentamicin (use GENT if strong suspicion of Listeria)
Treatment of infant older than three months for r/o sepsis
vancomycin and ceftriaxone
Treatment for a child with meningococcemia
Vancomycin and ceftriaxone
Meningococcal prophylaxis
Rifampin
can use CTX, cipro, or azithro in adults
Empiric treatment for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
3rd gen cephalosporin (CTX) and an aminoglycoside (gent)
Prophylaxis for PCP
Bactrim
Empiric treatment for fever and neutropenia
Zosyn polus gent; cefipime, or ceftazidime
treatment for cryptosporidium
Nitazoxanide
treatment for chlamydia conjunctivitis
ORAL erythromycin
Treatment for chlamydia pneumonia
Azithromycin x 5 days OR
Erythromycin x 14 days
Treatment for chlamydia cervicitis
Azithromycin 1000mg x 1 OR
Doxycycline x 7 days
Treatment for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Doxycycline x 7 days (even in a child <8)
Treatment for Cat Scratch Disease (Bartonella)
Supportive only UNLESS HSM, pain, immunocompromise. THEN you can use Azithro, Erythro, Cipro, Bactrim, or Rifampin.
Treatment for suspected H. flu
Ceftriaxone or cefotaxime
Prophylaxis for contacts of patients (if any are unimmunized, all should be covered) with H. flu
Rifampin
Treatment for pertussis
Azithro, erythro, or clarithro. Also bactrim.
Treatment for salmonella in immunocompromised patients
ceftriaxone or cefotaxime
treatment for typhoid fever
broad spectrum cephalosporins
Drugs effective against pseudomonas
Pip/tazo, gentamicin, imipenem and meropenem, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ceftazidime
Treatment for Brucellosis
Tretracycline OR
Bactrim plus rifampin
Treatment for group A strep pharyngitis
Amox or penicillin
Treatment for group A strep pharyngitis if allergic to penicillin
Azithro, clinda, or erythro.
Treatment for maternal syphillis
penicillin (erythro will help the mom, but not the fetus)
Treatment for congenital syphillis
penicillin
