Antibiotics Flashcards
Action of: Beta-lactams
Inhibit cell wall synthesis
Ex. Penicillin, Cephalosporin, Carbapenams, Beta lactamase
Action of: Glycopeptides
Inhibit cell wall synthesis
Ex. Vancomycin
DRUG of choice for Clostridium dificile and MRSA
Action of: Aminoglycosides
Inhibits protein synthesis by acting on 30s subunit
Ex. Gentamycin, toramycin
NOT active against anaerobes.
Used with penicillin for Enterococcus
Action of: Tetracyclines
Inhibits protein synthesis by acting on 30s subunit
Ex. Tetracycline, doxycycline
Affects bone and teeth in children
Super infection in yeast
Action of: Chloramphenicol
Inhibits protein synthesis by acting on 50s subunit
Ex. chloramphenicol
Can cause aplastic anemia
Action of: Macrolides
Inhibits protein synthesis by acting on 50s subunit
Ex. Erythromycin and Clindamycin
Clindamycin used for GP and GN anaerobes
Action of: Quinolines
Inhibits nucleic acid synthesis, used for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other aerobes
Ex. ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin
Action of: Sulfa Drugs (Sulfonomides)
Substitutes for PABA which blocks folic acid synthesis
Ex. Sulfamethoxazole
For UTI, enteric infection
Action for: Streptogramins
Inhibits protein synthesis
Ex. Quinupristin / Dalfopristin
For GP
Action for: Oxazdidinones
Inhibits protein synthesis
Ex. Linezolid
For GP
