Antibiotic Drugs Flashcards
Prokaryotes are single-celled organisms that lack a true nucleus and nuclear membrane.
Bacteria
A substance that kills bacteria or stops them from growing and causing disease.
Antibacterial
Equal to the sum of the effects of two antibiotics is called
Additive Effect
When two drugs are used together, the desired effect may be greatly reduced is called
Antagonistic Effect
Occurs when one antibiotic increases the effectiveness of the 2nd drug
Potentiative Effect
A spectrum that primarily effective against one type of organism (selective)
Narrow Spectrum
A spectrum that is effective against gram-positive and gram negative organisms
Broad Spectrum
When the drug chosen is known to be the best drug capable of killing the MO
Empiric Therapy
Following the identification of the MO in the lab, antibiotic therapy is tailored by using the most narrow-spectrum, least toxic drug based on C&S results.
Definitive Therapy
Happens when antibiotics reduce or eliminate the normal bacterial flora.
Superinfection
When signs and symptoms do not
improve
Subtherapeutic
A body fluid aspirate is examined under a microscope.
Gram Stain
Aspirated is applied to a medium
where they are grown for several days
Culture
Used for organisms where resistance is common, to test for sensitivity of the organisms to various antimicrobials
Sensitivity
A bioassay performed on the skin which
detects presence of allergen specific IgE on a patient’s mast
cells
Skin testing
