Antiarrhythmic Flashcards
Bisoprolol
Mechanism of action: antagonising B1 receptors on pacemaker cells that control heart rate, and contractile cells that cause contractility
Indications: arrhythmias, atrial fibrillations, atrial flutter
Contraindications: peripheral vascular diseases, COPD, asthma, diabetes mellitus
Side effects: nausea/vomiting, dizziness, headache, cold hands or feet
Digoxin
Mechanism of action: inhibits Na/K ATPase enzyme which leads to increased intracellular sodium as sodium is not pumped out. This decreases sodium calcium exchange which releases sodium out to let calcium in. This increases intracellular calcium so more calcium is available for contractile proteins. The cells contracting increases and therefore there’s an increase in contraction rate
Indications: arrythmias
Contraindications: acute myocardial infarction, hypersensitivity
Side effects: same as Bisoprolol
