Iron deficiency
Iron is usually prescribed
IRON IS HEAVY STUFF AND SHOULDN’T BE TAKKNG LIGHTLY
Can cause stains on teeth-liquid; dilute w/ water/juice or drink w/straw and rinse mouth after
Staining of skin if using IM route; be sure to go deep using Z-track
Don’t give w/antacids or tertracycline it reduces absorption; take 2hrs apart
Iron
Vitamin C increases absorption but also increases incidence of GI complications
Avoid Vitamin C when taking medication
Encourage clients to take iron on empty stomach/1hr before meals to maximize absorption
Iron Side effects
GI distress- nausea, heartburn, constipation
Administer w/foods if intolerable
Space doses to efficiently increase RBCs
Dark green or black stool is ok
Increase fiber intake and water to hell w/constipation
