What is the mechanism of action
A
- Decreases uptake + conc of inorganic iodine by the thyroid
- Reduced formation of di-iodotyrosine + throxine
- Active form is methimaxole –> prevents thyroid peroxidase enzyme
- reduces T4/3

What are the side effects
A
- headache
- Fever
- Pruritis
- Arthralgia
RARE - myopathy
- BM suppression (increase pancytopenia, agranulocytosis)
- jaundice

A
- Severe blood disorders
- Hepatic impairment
- Pregnancy
- breast feeding

Coumarins - enhances anticoagulant effect
