What does Anti-Semitism mean?
Any hostility toward, or discrimination against, Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group
Why was life for Jews not easy?
For long periods of time, Jewish people across Europe were treated differently by their non-Jewish neighbours, and at times violent attacks occured
How did Anti-Semitism start?
2,000 years ago, when the relationship between Jews and Romans changed as the Roman Empire grew.
How did Christianity affect Jews?
When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in the 4th century, Judaism became a rival religion; some early Christians wrongly claimed that Jews had killed Jesus.
What happened in the year 1000 CE?
Most of Europe became Christian and Jews, who didn’t share Christian beliefs, became the target for brutal persecution
How were Jews scapegoated?
Lies about Jews spread and they became demonised and wrongly blamed for crises such as plagues.
What unfair laws did rulers of different countries impose on Jews?
- Stopping Jews from doing certain jobs
- Making them live separately from non-Jews in ghettos
- Mandatory to wear hats, badges or certain items of clothing to show they were Jewish
What did the expulsion of Jews cause?
Great movement of Jewish refugees across Europe, which with the spread of Christianity made it even harder to find permanent residence
What did William the Conqueror do in 1066?
After he became King he encouraged Jews to settle in the country and were given protection by him
How did life for Jews change in the 1100s?
Jewish people started to be wrongly accused of murdering Christian children, and anti-Jewish feeling grew
What is an example of violence against Jews in England?
In York in 1190, around 150 people died after being trapped in a tower
What happened in 1290?
King Edward I ordered all Jews to leave the country, with England becoming the first country to expel Jewish people, and it was not until 1655 that these laws were removed and Jews returned.
