What is the difference between Epilepsy and Seizures?
Difference is the duration of their symptoms

Focal- start in an area of network on one side of the brain
Generalized- Affect both sides of the brain

When should you initiate Antiseizure Drugs to a patients?
Those who have had two or more unprovoked seizures
When should you consider stopping ASD?
- Seizure free period of 2-4 years
- Complete seizure control within 1 year of onset
- Onset of seizure after age 2 but before age 35
- And normal near examination and EEG
What is the main MOA of using Anti seizure drugs?
Target and diminish the release of glutamate, which is an excitatory drug
What medications can be used to treat Generalized Absence seizure
Ethosuximide

Valproic acid
When is Ethosuximide used and its MOA?
Used for Absence seizures
Decreases glutamate on a ion channel

Headache
Blood dyscrasias

Blocks Na and Ca channels and decrease glutamate

Box Warning = Serious skin rash. (Need to start low and go slow)
Diplopia
