How would you assess for the presence of Tardive Dyskinesia?
Aiden Exam: Ask patient to stick out tongue, look for tongue wavering. If wavering, drop dose and get on different medication.
What are some signs of EPS?
Tongue Thick (early) Dystonia (late- head up and to left, eyes roll up)`
Patient comes to ER with elevated temperature, sweating, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, muscles rigid…what do you suspect?

What is metabolic syndrome?
High BMI, elevated cholesteral, elevated blood sugar, elevated weight, waist gets big.
How would you prevent your patient on Risperdol from getting metabolic syndrome?
Manage- measure waist. Dose dependent so give as little as possible, Teach patient about what foods to eat- low cal foods.
Which atypical Antipsychotic works for people who didn’t get better on any other drugs?
Closapine (Clozeril)
What is a very important side effect of Atypical Antipsychotics that you must monitor?
Agranulocytosis (affects WBC and neutrophil
What WBC count is associated with agranulocytosis?
WBC below 5,000 (serious risk for infection)
What medications are used to treat the side effects of Antipsychotics?
Anticholinergics (Cogentin and Benadryl)
