What are the clinical indication for metronidazole?

A

Metronidazole is used to treat
- Amebic infections caused by Protozoa including Entamoeba histolytica , Trichomonas vaginalis ( vaginitis), Giardia lamblia (Giardiasis)

Although we say is an antiprotozoal agent, it is also useful in antibacterial treatment against

  1. Anaerobes such as Bacterioides species and Clostridium difficile (IMPT: First line treatment)
  2. H.pylori (part of the triple treatment, )
  3. surgical prophylaxis (30 to 60 min before incision)
