Anti-infectives Flashcards
Action of antiinfectives
target foreign organisms that have invaded and infected a human host
Role of antiinfectives
to reduce the population of a pathogen to the point where the patient’s immune system can handle it
When are antiinfectives toxic
if the drug/dosing is too aggressive and immunocompromised patients
Bactericidal
cause cell death
Bacteriostatic
prevent organism from reproducing and stops growth
What are the therapeutic actions of antiinfectives (5)
1- interfere with the biosynthesis of the pathogen cell wall 2-prevent the invading organisms from getting substances essential for growth 3- interfere with the steps of protein synthesis 4-interfere with DNA synthesis 5-alter the pathogen cell membrane permeability causing leaking and cell death
What cells do antiinfectives affect
both the target organism cells and human cells
Broad spectrum antiinfectives
useful in treating a wide variety of infections, lots of organism resistance against them
Narrow spectrum antiinfectives
effective against a few organisms with specific enzymes or a specific metabolic pathway, best used with culture/sensitivity testing
Prophylaxis
preventative
How do CNS adverse effects occur
drugs accumulate in the nerve tissue leading to toxicity
Where do adverse effects occur
CNS, kidney, hypersensitivity, GI, superinfection
