Anti-ice / de-ice Flashcards
What the diference beween deicing and anti icing?
Anti - prevents ice forming
deicing - clears ice that’s already formed
Which parts of an airframe (including wings and control surfaces) must be clear of contaminates
All of it.
Most commercial air transport aircraft (CAT) have onboard anti-icing and/or de-icing. It works on the engines, main wings but not always on the…..
Horizontal stabiliser or fin
A small but important selection of things are also de-iced (heated) on the fuselage?
Sensors and probes
What are the 4 main types of on-board airframe de-icing and anti-icing systems?
Bleed air
Electrical heating mats
Fluid
Inflatable boots
What are the 3 types of ice indicator?
Electromechanical
Mechanical
Electrical using reference and detector loops
Describe Electromechanical ice indicator
Vibrating probe. If the frequency changes, there is ice build up. Light comes on, as does the heat.
Heat turns off and probe vibrates again.
repeat
Describe Mechanical ice indicator
Probe with holes on leading and trailing edge.
If leading edge gets blocked with ice there is a change in pressure in an aneroid capsule.
Light comes on, probe heat comes on.
Repeat
Describe electrical ice detector
Two circuits.
One away from ice (reference)
One on leading edge.
If there is a difference then ice is likely.
How can propellors get deiced?
Fluid from the spinner
heated elements on the blades
Flight deck windscreens are de-iced by __________ _______
electrical heating
