Anti Hypertensive Flashcards

1
Q

What is hypertension?

A

It is the abnormal elevation of either systolic or diastolic blood pressure, systolic BP is the pressure during a heart beat and diastolic BP is the pressure between heart beat.
The heart rest between beats so that it can be refilled with blood.

Q

MOA of beta blockers

A

They reduce cardiac output and also decrease sympathetic outflow from the CNS.

12
Q

MOA of Alpha 1 blockers

A

They block alpha 1 adrenoceptors and they reduce peripheral resistance and lower arterial blood pressure

15
Q

MOA of ACEI

A

The block the production of Angiotensin II(which narrows BP)

Reduce peripheral resistance
Without causing increase in cardiac output and heart rate.

16
Q

Side Effects of ACEIs

A

Dry cough
Hypotension
Headache

17
Q

5.Angiotensin receptor blockers
(they are alternatives to ACEIs)
(Used for patients that can’t tolerate ACEIs)

Examples :

A

Valsartan

Losartan

18
Q

MOA of ARBs

A

They block angiotensin ii..

They cause vasodilation in arteries and veins.

19
Q

Side affects of ARBs

A

They are toxic to foetus

They are contraindicated to the foetus

20
Q
  1. Calcium channel blocker

Examples :

A

Verapamil
Nifedipine
Diltiazem.

21
Q

MOA of calcium channel blockers

A

They block the influx of calcium and when this occurs they reduce blood pressure
And they also dilate the coronary vessels.

22
Q

Side effect of Calcium channel blockers

A

Headache

Dizziness

23
Q
  1. Centrally acting anti hypertensives

Examples:

A

Clonidine

Alpha methyldopa

24
Q

MOA for centrally acting

A

They block alpha II adrenoceptors
Which blocks signal from the brain to the nervous system.
And also reduces arterial blood pressure.

25
Side effects of Centrally acting
Dry mouth Fluid retention Constipation
