Seizures
Temporary episodes of abnormal motor, sensory, autonomic, or psychic activity that result from sudden excessive electrical discharge from cortical neurons
Epilepsy
A group of syndromes characterized by unprovoked, recurring seizures
Status epilepticus
A series of generalized seizures that occur without full recovery of consciousness between attacks
Focal Seizure
Can be focal or local
Only occurs in one part of the brain
No impairment of consciousness
Often abnormal movements
May have aura
Can have focal seizure with altered awareness as well.
Status Epilepticus
Is a generalized tonic-clonic seizure that lasts 5 minutes of more
OR
The occurrence of 2 or more successive seizures without recovery
Is a neurological emergency
Generalized Seizures
Affects both hemisphere of the brain
Phases of Seizures
Pre-ictal-
May be started by a trigger and/or preceded by an aura
Ictal-
Actual seizure
Increases in metabolic demand
Post-ictal-
Has decreased responsiveness
Feels fatigue
