Anthropology Flashcards
The digital
New technologies that are ultimately reducible to binary code
Digital Anthropology
Wish to get a in depth understanding of a group regarding what people do with and in the digital and media. There is not one fixed culture, always in movement. From micro to macro
Datafication
Gives unprecedented capacities for surveillance and control which not only predict, but also shape and modify human behaviour
Entrepreneurs
Has been identified as central to an emerging paradigm of digital labor
Second life
A virtual world platform where users, known as residents, can interact with each other and the environment through avatar. It is designed as a user-generated content model, allowing residents to create and sell virtual items, experiences, and services
Cultural Anthropology
Explore how people in different places live and understand the world around them. Want to listen d to others and their viewpoint. Wish to truly understand people and what brings them to certain ideas. Fieldwork is the core.
Remediation
The idea is that if you are watching a medium, e.g YouTube, it plays with a similar format as TV
Newish
The term newish is important to avoid a divide between the old and the new. Prefer the term newish over new, since there is no clear divide when something new goes old. It is a gradual transformation. Digital tech is impactad by the same tech and is constantly evolving.
The logic of collective action
Refers to the traditional forms of collective action, such as protests and social movements, which have been studied by anthropologists. Social movement with clear goal. E.g Greenpeace
The logic of connective action
Refers to the new forms of collective action facilitated by digital technologies, such as social media and online platforms. These new forms of action allow for the rapid spread of information, coordination of activities, and mobilization of individuals for social and political causes. Collective action does not need a personal leader but a symbol
Creationist capitalism
How creativity is becoming a form of labor, and especially a digital form of labor. Creating entrepreneurs
The creativity dispositif
Refers to the ways in which creativity is constructed and understood within a particular social and cultural context. In the context of the document, the creativity dispositif is discussed in relation to digital socialities and the emergence of user-generated regimes online, particularly in virtual worlds like Second Life. It highlights how creativity is becoming construed as a form of labor, particularly in digital socialities, and how this understanding of creativity is transforming the dynamics of work and selfhood.
Repetitive creatives
Individuals who engage in creative activities that involve repetition or duplication, such as creating multiple virtual items or products in a digital environment like Second Life. These individuals may produce a large number of similar or identical items, and their creative labor is characterized by its repetitive nature
Material aspects
The digital world, while often online, is not immaterial
Holistic ethnography
Study the relationship with digital technologies in the broader context of their non-digital lives
