Anterior Thigh Muscles Flashcards
Muscles that flex the hip joint
Pectineus
Iliopsoas
Iliacus
Sartorius
Pectineus action
Adduct and flex thigh
Assist w/ medial rotation of thigh
Iliopsoas and iliacus action
Act conjointly in flexing thigh at hip joint
Stabilize hip joint
*Psoas major is also a postural muscle and helps control deviation of the trunk when standing
Sartorius action
Flexes, ABducts, and laterally rotates thigh at hip joint
Flexes leg at knee joint
Medially rotating leg when knee is flexed
*think of the tailor position: hip flexes, ABduction, thigh laterally rotates, knee flexed when crossed, medial rotation
Is the sartorius a strong abductor or weak abductor
WEAK. NONE OF THE SARTORIUS ACTIONS ARE STRONG. IT IS MAINLY A SYNERGIST.
Muscle of the quads that acts as a weak hip flexor
rectus femoris. only member of quads that acts as a weak hip flexor. Quads are the “great extensors.”
Extensors of the knee
Quadriceps Femoris
- Rectus femoris (also acts as weak hip flexor)
- Vastus Lateralis
- Vastus medialis
- Vastus intermedius
What do the quads do during bent knee sports like skiing and tennis?
They work as a fixator and contract eccentrically during downhill walking and descending stairs
When is the rectus formis ability to extend the knee compromised?
Rectus femoris has a hard time extending the knee during hip flexion.
What is rectus femoris particularly efficient in?
In movements combining knee extension and hip flexion from a position of hip hyperextension and knee flexion, like when you’re getting ready to kick a soccer ball. Because of this it is susceptible to avulsion fx.
What does the articularis genu do?
It pulls this synovial membrane superiorly during extension of the leg.
Pectineus muscle is what kind of muscle?
A transitional muscle between the anterior and medial compartments. This is b/c of the dual nerve supply and the muscles actions (adduct and flex thigh and medially rotate thigh
