16
Q

What do women with hypothyroidism do during pregnancy ?

A

Take thyroxine as the requirement of thyroxine increases during pregnancy - normal levels needed for foetal brain development

17
Q

What do women with hyperthyroidism do during pregnancy ?

A

Thyroid stimulating antibodies can cross the placenta - check on foetus regularly

18
Q

What kind of medication will a pregnant women be placed on if she is TIIDM ?

A

From PO medication to insulin for tighter diabetic control.

19
Q

What is an antenatal abdominal examination comprised of ?

A

Asses symphyseal fundal height (SFH)
Estimate size of baby
Estimate liquor volume
Determine foetal position – listen to foetal heart

20
Q

What infections are all pregnant women tested for ?

A

Rubella
Hep. B
Syphilis
HIV

21
Q

What can rubella do to the unborn foetus ?

A

Mental handicap
Blindness
Deafness
Heart defects

22
Q

What does congenital syphilis do to the unborn foetus ?

A

Causes intrauterine growth restriction, hepato-splenomegaly, anaemia, thrombocytopenia, skin rashes. Easily treated with penicillin with good outcome.

23
Q

What is Rhesus disease?

A

Rhesus disease where anti-D antibodies occur. If a Rhesus negative woman is carrying a rhesus positive baby she will develop anti D antibodies if the foetal red blood cells enter the maternal circulation.

24
Q

How do you treat Rhesus disease ?

A

Anti D IgG is offered to all Rh negative women both prophylactic after potential sensitizing events

25
Q

What is the basis of the first foetal scan ?

A

Ensure viable pregnancy.
Identify abnormalities incompatible with life.
Offer and carry out down’s syndrome screening.

26
Q

What is the basis of the detailed anomaly scan ?

A

Systematic structure review of baby.
Not possible to identify all problems
Can identify problems that need intrauterine or post-natal treatment.

27
Q

How is Down Syndrome characterized ?

A

3 copies of chromosome 21

28
Q

When is the 1st trimester scan carried out ?

A

10-14 weeks gestation

29
Q

What is measured and is in line with the presence of a chromosomal disorder ?

A

Nuchal translucency

30
Q

When can an amniocentesis be done ?

A

15 Weeks onwards

31
Q

What trimester scan will detect 90% of neural tube defects ?

A

2nd trimester scan

32
Q

Which scan is best for seeing structural abnormalities but not best for chromosomal abnormalities ?

A

2nd trimester scan
