Antecedent Strategies Flashcards
Antecedent strategies
Proactive strategies to be used BEFORE
challenging behavior occurs
Priming
Providing heads up regarding upcoming transitions and/or expected behavior, reminding client to use replacement behaviors (e.g., “in two minutes your break is over”)
Environment arrangements
Moving items in the environment or positioning self to decrease likelihood challenging behavior can occur (e.g., sitting between client and the door, having hair up in a bun)
Timer
Using a timer to inform client of how much time they have in an activity (i.e., timing their break time)
Visual aid
Visual schedule, token economy, break card, first then cards
Token economy
Provide tokens for correct responding. When all tokens are earned, they are turned in for preferred item
Premack principle
“First, then” statements
Non-contingent reinforcement
Providing reinforcement on a schedule (e.g., giving attention every five minutes to decrease motivation to engage in attention-maintained behavior)
Interspersal Training
Alternating between things the client can already do (easy) and new target skills (hard)
Shared Control/Choice Making
Giving client a choice between 2 different options they get to choose from
