ANS of Abdomen and Pelvis- Wilson Flashcards
The visceral motor system can be distinguished from the somatic motor system by what 3 factors?
- effector controlled by motor fiber
- organization of the peripheral nervous system
- location within the CNS
The autonomic nervous system regulates the activities of what cells?
- smooth muscle
- cardiac muscle
- glands
How many fibers are in the autonomic pathway between the CNS and effector?
2
1st neuron is in the CNS and is called the preganglionic neuron
2nd neuron is located in a PNS ganglion and is called postganglionic neuron
How many GSE fibers are in the somatic pathway between the CNS and effector?
1
effector (skeletal muscle)
Anatomically, the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems can be distinguished by the locations of their preganglionic neurons. What are their locations?
Sympathetic nervous system originated from spinal cord levels T1-L2 (thoraco-lumbar)
parasympathetic system originates on either side of the sympathetic nervous system and has dual craniosacral origin):
- cranial: CN III, VII, IX, X
- sacral: S2, S3, S4
How many cranial/spinal nerves have white communicating rami on the left side?
14
white communicating rami is part of the sympathetic nervous system (is the preganglionic sympathetic outflow nerve tract from the spinal cord T1-L2) which is a total of 14 spinal nerves
Most organs and glands receive dual innervation from the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. How are these systems in relation to one another?
generally speaking they are antagonistic producing opposite effects
Which part of the ANS is the skin innervated by?
sympathetic nervous system:
- arrector pili muscles
- blood vessels (smooth muscle)
- glands (sebaceous and sweat glands)
Parasympathetic DOES NOT innervate the skin.
Describe the body state for which the sympathetic and parasympathetic system is active.
sympathetic nervous system: body in fight or flight
parasympathetic nervous system: body in steady or resting state
