What are the indications for phentolamine (non selective alpha antagonist)?
For HTN emergencies, pehochromocytoma, infiltration (to counterbalance NE)
What is the indication for prazosin (A1 >a2)?
BPH, HTN
What is the effect and indications of isoproterenol?
“Chemical pacemaker!” - increases HR, increases contractility, bronchodilation
Indications: heart block or pacemaker to elicit tachycardia in surgery
What are the indications for dobutamine (b1 > b2)?
Good for patients with CHF
Increases contractility w/o increasing HR or BP!
What are side effects of terbutaline and albuterol?
Tremore, hyokalemia, hyperglycemia in diabetics
What beta antagonist would you give to an asthmatic?
Metropolol (B1 selective) - would not cause vasoconstriction of the lungs
What are the indications for atenolol?
Patients with CAD
Which beta blocker is not used for HTN?
Esmolol (B1 selective) - used for emergency IV therapy of tachycardia
What are the indications for propranolol (B1 = B2)?
HTN, angina, cardiac dysrhytmias, MI
What are the 2 synthetic catecholamines?
Dobutamine and isoproterenol
What are the effects/indications of bethanechol?
Used for decreased GI/GU motility (post -op)
Effects include increased secretions and peristalsis, decreased HR, increase tone and motility of GI, bladder emptying
When would you not give bethanechol?
Patients with heart block, bladder or bowel obstruction, asthma, or hypotension
What muscarinic antagonist would give for muscarinic poisoning or cholingeric crisis?
Atropine
Why would you not give atropine to an asthmatic?
Can thicken and dry up secretions
