ANS Flashcards
1
Q
What is Shy-Drager syndrome?
A
multiple system atrophy
= synucleopathy (disorder of alpha synuclein protein that accumulates in areas of the brain)
- associated with loss of intermediolateral cell bodies and striatonigral brain areas (loss of SNS)
- symptoms: orthostatic hypotension, dry mouth, hypohidrosis
rare but underdiagnosed (as PD)
2
Q
What is hypertension?
A
- exaggerated sympathetic nerve activity to blood vessels and renal bed (higher set point)
- leads to increased circulating volume and vascular tone
3
Q
What are the two types of hypertension?
A
primary/idiopathic
secondary - hormonal conditions (Cushings)
4
Q
What is heart failure?
A
inability to pump sufficient blood around body to meet oxygen demand
association with increased SNS activity to renal bed
- cause hypervolaemia
- hypernatremia
- increase strain on cardiac tissue
5
Q
What is PD?
A
early sign is autonomic dysfunction (orthostatic hypotension, constipation)
synucleopathy - a synuclein may accumulate in vagus nuclei of brainstem (NTS)
could be a GI derived virus
