ANOVA Flashcards

Q

What is the variance between groups ?

A

Difference between the means of 2 groups

If it is far apart then the groups are not similar but if it is similar then the groups are considered to be similar

Q

What is ANOVA?

A

A statistical test used to analyse the differences between 3 or more groups
It tests the amount of variability between means of several groups with the amount of variability among the values within the groups

Q

What is variance within groups?

A

Comparing the standard deviations between 2 groups

If it is small then groups are not similar but if it is large then groups are similar

Q

What are t-tests ?

A

Statistical test used to determine whether the means of 2 independent groups were statistically different

4
Q

Why is multiple t-testing bad ?

A

Very tedious

Because the testing is normally at a 5% significance level if you did lots of test a type 1 error is likely to be caused

Q

What is total degrees of freedom ?

A

It tells you the number of values which is able to vary

dft= dfw + dfb

What is the mean square within (MSw) ?

A

SSw/dfw

Measure of the variability within groups - occurs by chance or sampling error

14
Q

What is the Fobt ?

A

MSb/MSw
This is a ratio of the mean square values and tells you whether the difference between the groups are significantly greater than we would expect by chance
This value is compared with the Fcrit

15
Q

How is the intermediate X calculated ?

A

Grand total squared/total observations(Nt)

16
Q

How is the intermediate Y calculated ?

A

Sum of equal value in each squared

17
Q

How is the intermediate Z calculated ?

A

Add the value of the group together and square it and then divide by the amount in each group
Then add all groups together

18
Q

What does a high Fobt indicate ?

A

Indicates that the groups are different

19
Q

When is the Fobt statistically significant ?

A

If the Fobt is greater than the Fcrit then there is significance between some or all of the groups

20
Q

What are the underlying assumptions of t-tests and ANOVA?

A

Data are independent
Data are normally distributed
Variances of each group are equal

21
Q

What do you do if the data is not normally distributed ?

A

Use a non-parametric test
Use the Mann-Whitney test to compare 2 unmatched groups
Use kruskal-Wallis test to compare 3 or more groups

22
Q

What is the mean ?

A

Suitable measure of central tendency

23
Q

What is the standard error of the mean ?

A

Accuracy of estimated mean

24
Q

What is the standard deviation ?

A

Represents the spread of data

25
Q

What is correlation analysis ?

A

It is a significant relationship between 2 variables
