annelid diversity Flashcards
Polychaete worms are divided into two groups
- those that are errant (used parapodia for locomotion, foraging)
- those that are sedentary (use parapodia (if present) for feeding currents
for excretion, what are the differences between clitellata and polychaetes?
- clitellata use metanephridia
- most polychaetes used protonephridia
Differences between metanephridia and protonephridia?
Metanephridia: uses later filtrations, no screen to filter out molecules
Protonephridia: uses ultrafiltration, removes useful molecules from waste fluid
what is polychaete reproduction like?
- gonochoristic, with external fertilization
- has epitoky (asexual budding)
- and trochophore larva
what are the 3 groups under polychaetes?
- family siboglinidae
- the echiruans
- the sipunculans
defining characteristics under family siboglinidae?
- trophosome (organ that contains chemoautotrophic bacteria
- limited, posterior segmentation
what are defining characteristics of siphunculans
- introvert, can be completely withindrawn inside its own body
- urns (extretory function)
What are the defining characteristics of clitellata?
- clitellum, glandular region that secretes mucus
- permanent gonads
While polychaetes are polyphyletics, clitellata are
monophyletic
what are two subclasses under clitellata?
- oligochaeta (earthworms)
- hirundinea (leaches)
Major differences between oligochaeta and hirundnea?
Oligochaeta: decomposers, internal segmentation, external reproduction with equal division of reproduction
hirundinea: ectoparasites mostly, lost internal segmentation, internal fertilization
