Ankylosing Spondylitis Flashcards
1
Q
what is Ankylosing spondylitis ? 5
A
- chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints
- form of arthritis
- In response to the inflammation, the body produces extra calcium around the bones of the spine.
- fusion leading to a classic bamboo spine.
- If ribs are affected, it can be difficult to breathe deeply.
2
Q
causes of AS 1 reference
A
No specific cause, through genetic factors seem to be involved gene- HLA-B27 (Tam et al. 2010.)
3
Q
population of AS
A
- males
- risk increases with age, over 50
4
Q
symptoms of AS 6
A
- early morning stiffness in lower back and hips
- fatigues and neck pain
- pain in prolonged sitting
- enthesitis - pain and swelling where ligaments and tendons attach to bones
- shortness of breath - as AS progresses fusion of thoracic and ribs attached limits expansion of chest
- inflammation of the eye
5
Q
AS imaging 3
A
- blood tests to check for inflammation of the body and genetic testing
- X-ray
- MRI
6
Q
surgery for AS 3
A
- osteotomy - cut bones to shorten or change their alignment - to help improve posture
- spinal fusion- if the osteotomy cuts of vertebral stabilisation - will not have any flexibility
- spinal decompression laminectomy
7
Q
non- invasive approach AS 4
A
- NSAIDs
- postural training
- corticosteroids
- Anti-TNF medication - TNF is a chemical produced by cells when tissue is inflamed
