What is the tibialis anterior?

A

It is the superficial muscle on the anterior leg. It arises from the upper tibia and runs to the tarsal bones of the foot. It acts to dorsiflex and invert the foot.

What is the gastronemus?

A

It is the curved calf of the posterior leg. It inserts via the achillies tendon into the calcaneus or heel bone. It is a prime mover for plantarflexion.

A

The soleus is deep to the gastrocnemius. It is a strong plantarflexor of the foot.
