Animals And Plants Flashcards
What do muscle cells obtain energy from?
The sugar glucose through a series of chemical reactions that require CO2
What do muscles need energy to do?
Perform work
What do muscles need a steady supply of to keep working?
Oxygen
Aerobic definition
Enough oxygen reaching cells to support their energy needs
What happens as your muscles work harder?
You breathe faster and deeper to inhale more oxygen
What is aerobic capacity?
The maximum rate at which one can take in enough oxygen to be used by muscle cells
What does it mean to exceed aerobic capacity?
The demand for oxygen in ones muscles has outstripped ones body’s ability to deliver it and metabolism becomes anaerobic
What happens when muscle cells switch into “emergency mode”?
They break down glucose very inefficiently and produce lactic acid as a byproduct
What does lactic acid do?
Impairs muscle ability and produces “the burn”
Where does all energy originate from?
The sun
What does the sun do?
It converts matter to energy and radiates some of it as visible light
How much of the suns light reaches earth? How much of that light powers life?
A tiny portion. A tiny portion of that tiny portion.
What process makes it possible to use the suns light as energy?
Photosynthesis
Where does photosynthesis occur on land?
In green cells within leaves of plants
What causes plants to be green?
Chlorophyll, a pigment molecule in chloroplasts
