Animals Flashcards
What are the five characteristics of animals?
1) Multicellular
2) Eukaryotic
3) Specialized cells
4) Heterotrophs
5) Capable of movement
What is a heterotroph?
An organism that eats other organisms
What is a carnivore?
An organism that eats meat.
What are you if you have a plant based diet?
An herbivore.
What is an omnivore?
An organism that eats both meat and plants.
What percent of animals are vertebrates? What percent are invertebrates?
Vertebrates-3%
Invertebrates-97%
What is a vertebrate?
An animal with a backbone (Cats, horses, rabbits, etc.)
What is an invertebrate?
An animal without a backbone (Jellyfish, slugs, ants, etc.)
What are eight special adaptations that help animals survive?
1) Outer coverings
2) Sharp quills
3) Size
4) Mimicry
5) Camouflage
6) Chemical sprays
7) Speed
8) Traveling in groups
What are the three types of symmetry?
1) Asymmetry
2) Radial symmetry
3) Bilateral symmetry
What is asymmetry?
An organism with no definite shape (Sponges)
What is radial symmetry?
An organism with body parts arranged in a circle around a center point—have no head (Starfish, sea urchin, sand dollar)
What is bilateral symmetry?
An organism that can be divided into right and left halves that are mirror images (Most common type)
