Laboratory Animal welfare act
- created august 24, ‘66 & effective may 25, ‘67
- purpose to protect against pet theft, the sale of stolen dogs/cats, & assure humane care of some animals in research
- USDA enforced
- includes dogs, cats, primates, rabbits, hamsters, & guinea pigs
*only facilities w/ dogs nd cats had to register
What happened to the AWA on December 24, 1970
- original law amended to include institutions using animals other than dogs/cats in research
*covered all warm-blooded animals, exhibitors, and auctions
- handling & “adequate veterinary care” added to include anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquilizers
What happened to the AWA in 1976
- enacted on april 22
- added inclusion of marine animals, increased guidelines for transportation/shipping, added language against using animals for fighting

- effective nov. 28, 1990
- est. a minimal 5 day holding pd for animals in pounds and shelters that are sold to dealers
- dealers have to give written certification regarding each animal’s background to recipient
- USDA can seek injunctions to licensed facility selling stolen animals
