Animal Tissues, Organs and Organ Systems Flashcards
What is the enzyme used to break down starch?
Amylase or Carbohydrase
What is the enzyme used to break down protein?
Protease
What is the enzyme used to break down fat?
Lipase
What happens at optimum temperature?
The enzyme becomes denatured and loses its shape
What happens as temperature increases?
Particles vibrate more and have more kinetic energy, leading to more collisions and a faster reaction
Bile emulsifies…
Fats
Emulsification
Breaking something down into smaller pieces
How does emulsifying fats help digestion?
Tiny droplets have higher SA for lipases to work
Where are fatty acids and glycerol absorbed?
In the small intestine using villi
Why is fat needed for our diet?
Lipids form the cell membrane and the myelin sheath covering neurones
What is the function of the mouth?
To break down food, produces amylase and starch
What is the function of the oesophagus?
To carry food to the stomach
What is the function of the stomach?
To break down food and kill bacteria, produces hydrochloric acid and protease
What is the function of the liver?
Process absorbed food, make bile and detoxify blood
What is the function of the pancreas?
To produce digestive enzymes, break down starch and make insulin
