Animal studies of Attachment : Lorenz Flashcards
What is Lorenz’s aim?
To investigate the mechanisms of imprinting where the youngsters follow and form an attachment to the first large, moving object that they meet.
What was the procedure?
He divided the goose eggs into two
- experimental group = hatched in an incubator (1st thing they saw was Lorenz)
- control group = hatched w/ mother goose
what was his findings?
Experimental group followed him
Control group followed mother goose
define imprinting
where birds that are mobile from birth attach to the first moving thing they use
define critical period
A period of time during which imprinting needs to occur in order for any early attachment to form
what is sexual imprinting linked with?
adult mate preference
describe Lorenz sexual imprinting on a peacock case study
birds who imprint on humans would they display courtship behaviours towards them
peacocks in a zoo who first saw tortoises directed their courtship towards them
