Animal Studies - AO3 Flashcards
Why is generalisability a problem in Lorenz’s study?
There’s a problem generalising findings from birds to humans as we experience different types of attachment - humans don’t imprint and show a more emotional attachment
Who questioned Lorenz’s observations?
Guiton et al
How did Guiton’s findings oppose Lorenz’s?
they found that sexual imprinting wasn’t irreversible - saw that chicks that imprinted on a yellow glove eventually learnt to prefer other chickens
How do Harlow’s findings have theoretical value?
They showed that contact comfort is more imp in attachment than feeding, demonstrating the importance of the quality of early attachment in social development
How do Harlow’s findings have practical value?
1) It has helped in the development of social work - risk factors in child neglect and abuse and how to prevent it.
2) Showed the importance of proper attachment figures for monkeys in zoos
What are the ethical problems in Harlow’s study?
The monkeys suffered greatly and b/c monkey species and humans are connected we can assume their suffering was human-like
