What does the wheel of change show?
How forms of transport have changed over time.
Some modes have changed a lot whilst some others haven’t changed at all.
How long ago were hot air balloons invented?
300 to 200 years ago
When were bicycles invented?
200 to 100 years ago
When were vehicles and trams pulled by horses?
200 to 100 years ago
How recently were trains, ships with engines, motor cars, aeroplanes and spacecraft invented?
Within the last 300 to 200 years.
What has been the effect of changes in mode of transport?
- Possible/ easier to travel to different destinations. As the modes of transport have improved, people can travel further, quicker.
- Transportation of goods has become easier. Therefore, we can get goods from countries a long way from ours.
What was the first form of transportation?
Walking
What disadvantage is there with using walking as a form of transport?
- Man couldn’t travel very far.
2. Man had to carry things themselves. This limited the amount and weight that could be carried.
How did the development of farming affect transportation?
Animals (e.g. Horses, oxen and donkeys) were used to transport people and goods.
When was the wheel invented?
Around 3500 BC
What did the first wheel look like?
A solid disc carved from one piece of wood.
How did the design of the wheel evolve?
The wheel was made lighter by using spokes instead of a solid disc.
Where was the oldest example of a wheel found?
Mesopotamia ( by archeologists).
It is probably over 500 years old.
What was the benefit of the wheel?
- People could travel faster and further than on foot.
