Animal Phyla (Invertebrates) Flashcards
Molluscs
Second largest animal phylum in the animal kingdom,No backbone, crawl on a single fleshy pad, have bilateral symmetry and can have a shell For Example snails, slugs, oysters and mussels
Platyhelminths
Flatworms. Have flat worm like bodies, have bilateral symmetry and live in water or moist places. For example tape worms
Annelids
Have found worm like bodies. Have bodies divided into segments. For example earth worms and leeches. Annelids common name is the segmented worm. They live in damp or moist places.
Nematodes
Roundworms, have long thin round worm like bodies, have bodies with no segments. They have bilateral symmetry. They are found in damp places and as a parasite in organisms bodies.
Porifearns
Sponges. Have bodies made up of loosely joined cells.
Echinoderms
Have bodies divided into five parts, have spiny outer coverings. For example starfish, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. They have radial symmetry
Cnidarians
Have thin sack like bodies, have tentacles, radial symmetry, stinging cells and one body opening. For example jellyfish, sea anemone and coral polyps.
Arthropods
Have lots of legs and segmented bodies. There are 4 groups of arthropods:
ARACHNIDS- have 4 pairs of legs/have bodies divided into 2 sections
CENTIPEDE/MILLIPEDE - Have long thin bodies and pairs of legs on each of their many body sections.
CRUSTACEANS- Have 5-7 pairs of legs, 1st pair often used as pincers, bodies covered in shell, exoskeleton.
INSECTS- Have 3 pairs of legs, bodies divided into 3 sections, often have wings
