Animal Phyla (b) - Lecture 3 Flashcards
What does Lagerstatte mean?
A deposit of remarkable fossil quantity or diversity
What is the index fossil for the pre Cambrian/Cambrian boundary?
Treptichnus pedum
What key characteristics surrounded the Cambrian explosion?
triploblastic body plans (three germ layers), Mineralised hard parts, Infaunal lifestyles, Complex ecosystems, Creation of external calcium/phosphate shells
What are developmental genes?
Regulate an organism’s development from fertilised egg to adult
What are the key characteristics of arthropods (e.g. trilobites) (three) ?
Segmented bodies, Jointed appendages, Exoskeleton
What are the key characteristics of Brachiopods (General) (three)
Bivalved shell of calcium carbonate or organophosphate, Attached by a pedicle or free lying, mantle cavity contains lophophore for feeding and respiring
How do you distinguish between Rhynchonelliformea and Linguliformea brachiopods?
Rhy. has calcareous shells, hinge, short pedicle. Ling. has organophosphate shell no hinge and a longer pedicle.
