Animal Hormones Flashcards
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
- Created in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland
- ADH creates aquaporin proteins which causes water to flow out of the collecting duct. decreases urine volume
Oxytocin
- Created in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland
- Stimulates the contraction of the uterus, mammary glands, and known as the social bonds
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
- Made in the anterior pituitary gland
- Activates the thyroid gland to begin secretion
Adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH)
- Made in the anterior pituitary gland
- Activates adrenal cortex to release the glucocorticoids made there
Growth Hormone (or… Somatotropin)
- Made in the anterior pituitary gland
- Stimulates the secretion of somatomedins which will activate growth by protein synthesis, fat breakdown, and increase blood glucose levels
Prolactin (PRL)
- Made in the anterior pituitary gland
- Breast development as well as milk production during pregnancy (Non Trophic)
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
- Made in the anterior pituitary gland
- Female: induces ovulaton
- Male: regulation of sex hormones
Follicle Stimulation Hormone (FSH)
- Made in the anterior pituitary gland
- Female: stimulates development of the follicle in the ovaries.
- Male: stimulates sperm production
Melanocyte-stimulating Hormone (MSH)
- Made in the anterior/intermediate pituitary
- Regulates the activity of pigments in the skin (Non Trophic)
Corticotropin-releasing Hormone (CRH)
Stimulates ACTH secretion
Thyrotropin-releasing Hormone (TRH)
Stimulates TSH secretion
Gonadotropin-releasing Hormone (GnRH)
Stimulates FSH and LH secretion
Growth-hormone-releasing Hormone (GHRH)
Stimulates GH secretion
Somatostatin
Inhibits GH secretion
Prolactin-inhibiting Hormone (PIH)
Inhibits prolactin secretion
