Define protected animal
One which is commonly domesticated in the British Isles, under control of man. Not living in a wild state.
What is the age of responsibility for an animal?
16 and over
Animal fights- who commits an offence?
Anyone who keeps or trains an animal for fighting.
Or anyone who possesses (without reasonable excuse) any equipment designed or adapted for use in animal fighting
E.g. Cock Spurs, vet meds/steroids, spiked collars
Anyone who causes a fight to take place, arranges
a fight, participates in arrangements, allows premises to be used, makes a bet, attends a fight, possessing a video with intent to supply to another person (if after oct 2006)
Define a prohibited procedure
Any procedure which involves interference with sensitive tissue or bone structure of an animal
Define abandonment
Leaving an animal you’re responsible for unattended without reasonable excuse and failing to make adequate provisions for its welfare
What is the legal age of a person to sell an animal to?
16
What powers exist for police to take possession of an animal?
If you find a protected animal is suffering you can take steps which are immediately necessary to alleviate the animals suffering, with or without the owners permission.
When can you enter and search without a warrant?
If immediate entry is in the interests of the animal for the purpose of taking possession of destruction. This does not apply to domestic premises.
What animal welfare offences exist?
Sec 19-23 unnecessary suffering, mutilation, cruel operations, poisoning, and animal fights (straight arrest)
Sec. 24- ensuring welfare
Sec 29- abandonment
Sec 40- disqualification orders
What can courts put in place for offenders of relevant animal welfare offences?
Deprivation or disqualification orders
When can a deprivation order include the destruction of an animal?
If recommended by a vet for an animals welfare

- Owning/keeping animals
- Transporting animals
- Working with animals
- Dealing animals
- Riding/ driving animals
- Providing any service relating to animals (involving possession)
- Taking possession of animal for any activity
