Animal Diversity and Body Plans Flashcards
Do sponges have symmetry?
No, they lack it
Radial symmetry
Example
any cut through the central axis produces two equal halves
sea anemones
Bilateral symmetry
example
What does it allow for?
right and left halves along the midline
insects, vertebrates
directional movement and evolution of associated features
Define Tissues
example
collections of similar cells that cary out a specific function, and differentiation is permanent.
muscle tissue, nervous tissue
Why do sponges lack tissues?
they are cell aggregates with specialization. Individual cells can dedifferentiate and redifferentiate
Do radial adn bilateral animals have tissues?
Yes
What kind of tissues do radial animals have?
two germ layers (diploblastic
-endoderm and ectoderm
but no organs
What kind of tissue do Bilateral animals have?
three germ layers (triploblastic)
-endoderm, ectoderm and mesoderm
organs and sometimes organ systems
What are the three types of body cavities
- Acelomate
- Pseudocoelomate
- Coelmate
What does Acoelomate mean?
No cavity
What does Psuedocoelomate mean?
is a false body cavity
What is a coelomate?
a true body cavity, that allows for segmentation and organ system to form because it was accommodating and supporting
Spiralian Protostomes do what three things?(development Patterns(bilateral animals))
- Spiral cleavage
- Determinate Development
- Mouth first
Deuterostomes do what three things? (Development Patterns (bilateral animals))
- Radial Cleavage
- Indeterminate Development
- Anus first
What are the 7 features of animals?
- Multicellular heterotrophs
- No rigid cell walls
- Active movement
- Diverse in form and habitat
- Sexual reproduction common
- Embryonic development
- Tissues (except sponges)
