ANIMAL COORDINATION, CONTROL AND HOMEOSTASIS Flashcards
List the Endocrine Glands.
Ovaries/Testes
Pituitary Gland
Adrenal Glands
Thyroid Gland
Pancreas
Where is the Pituitary gland located?
In the brain, linked to the Hypothalmus
What is the Hypothalmus?
The part of the brain that receives signals detected by receptors. It regulates temperature and water balance in the body.
Where is the Thyroid gland located?
In the neck
Where are the Adrenal Glands Located?
Above each Kidney
What are Hormones?
Chemical Messengers
How do hormones differ from impulses?
Hormones travel more slowly, through the bloodstream. Hormones can reach larger areas of the body whilst impulses target a specific spot.
What is the definition of Homeostasis?
The maintenance of consistent internal conditions in an organism.
What is ADH?
Anti Diuretic Hormone, Released by the Pituitary gland to target the Kidneys and cause them to regulate water content in blood.
What is Negative Feedback?
A system where the body detects interruptions of ideal conditions and returns them to the ideal condition.
How is Thyroxine Regulated?
Low Thyroxine levels –> THYROTROPIN releasing hormone (TRH) released by Hypothalamus –> Thyroid Stimulating Hormone released by Pituitary –> Thyroxine released by thyroid to control metabolic rate. Normal Thyroxine Levels inhibit release of TRH.
What is the metabolic rate?
The rate at which oxygen and food react with the body to produce energy.
What does TRH stand for
Thyrotropin releasing hormone. (THY - RO - TRO - PIN)
What is Glycogen?
The chemical store of Glucose. Glucose is converted into Glycogen with insulin.
What is Glucagon?
A hormone that causes glycogen to be converted into Glucose.
