What is a vertebrate?
An animal that has a spine or a backbone
What is an invertabrate?
An animal that does not have a spine
Name the five (5) classes of vertebrates
Mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles
Name the characteristics of a fish
- Breathe through gills
- Live under water
- Most are cold blooded
- Most lay eggs

- Cold blooded
- Moist skin
- Live on land and water
- Breathe with gills and lungs

- Breathe with lungs
- Have scales
- Most lay eggs
Name the characteristics of mammals
- Get milk from their mother when they are very young
- Live births (not eggs)
- warm blooded
- Breathe air with lungs
- Have hair or fur

- Warm blooded
- Have feathers and wings
- Lay eggs
- Most can fly

Sponges, cnidarians, echinoderms, arthropods, mollusks, and worms

- Most primitive of animal groups
- Live in water
- Do not move from place to place
- Filter tiny organisms from the water for food

- Very primitive
- Mouths are surrounded by stinging tentacles
Name some examples of cnidarians
Jellyfish, coral, and sea anemones
Name the characteristics of echinoderms
- Live in sea water
- Have external skeletons
- “spiny skin”
- Use sucker-like parts to catch prey
