Animal Classification - Phylum Protozoa Flashcards
These animals are microscopic in size, single celled and classified by their locomotion.
Phylum Protozoa
What are protozoans 3 main methods of movemnet?
Whip-like tails, flagella
Foot like structures, pseudopods
Hair-like structures, cilia
(some do not move)
What do spores do?
All spore producing protozoans are parasities for human and animals. Cause a number of diseases.
Common disease in livestock, caused by the protozoan Babesia.
Red water fever ( babesiosis)
Stage one of the life cycle of Babesia.
A tick sucks blood from infected cow
Stage two of the life cycle of Babesia.
They form gametes that form a zygote ( sexual reproduction?
Stage three of the life cycle of Babesia.
Spores formed in tick (asexual reproduction)
Stage four of the life cycle of Babesia.
Tick bites next cow to suck blood. Transmits spores into bloodstream.
Stage five of the life cycle of Babesia.
Spores form sporozoites that enter red blood cells of the cow and break them down. The haemoglobin that is released from the red blood cells is passed in the urine of the cow. Giving the name redwater fever
Symptoms of redwater fever (babesiosis)
Red urine
Increased heart rate
Diarrhoea followed by constipation
