Animal cells Flashcards
What cells are animals made of?
- Animals are made of cells.
→ These cells are eukaryotic.
What does eukaryotic mean?
This means they have a nucleus and other structures which are surrounded by membranes.
What type of membranes do animal cells have?
A selectively permeable membrane surrounding the cell + controlling the entry + exit of materials.
What can be seen in an animal cell with a light microscope + electron microscope?
- Cytoplasm, Nucleus,Mitochondrion.
What part of a cell can be seen with a light microscope but not in much detail?
Mitochondria (singular:mitochondrion) are visible with a light microscope but can’t be seen in detail.
What subcellular structure can only be seen with an electron microscope and not a light microscope?
Ribosomes are only visible with an electron microscope.
What parts of a cell’s structure are found in animal cells?
- Cytoplasm
- Nucleus
- Cell membrane
- Mitochondria,
- Ribosomes.
How is the cytoplasm related to it’s function ( what is it’s function?).
- A jelly-like material that contains dissolved nutrients and salts and structures called organelles.
- It is where many of the chemical reactions happen.
How is the nucleus related to it’s function+ What is it’s function?
Contains genetic material, including DNA, which controls the cell’s activities.
How does the cell membrane relate to it’s function + what is it’s function?
It is permeable to some substances but not to others + so control the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
How do mitochondria relate to it’s function + what is it’s function?
Organelles that contain the enzymes for respiration, and where most energy is released in respiration.
How do ribosomes relate to it’s function? ( What is it’s function?)
Tiny structures where protein synthesis occurs.
How are most cells able to carry out specific functions?
Most cells are specialised + are adapted for their function.
What do animals + plant cells consist of?
Animal + plant cells consist of many different types of cell working together.
