Actions and reactions by animal-stimuli and situations in their environment. Includes reflex’s and instincts as well as complex social interactions and problem solving
What is animal behaviour (broadly)
The way an animal acts
Stimulus
Something that elicits a response
Example of stimuli
Sight and colour
Touch and vibration
Smell and gravity
Taste
Sound
Heat/cold
Humidity, chemicals and pressure
External stimulus
Something outside the animal. Example: presence of another animal
Internal stimulus
Something inside the animal. Example: hunger, hormones
Innate behaviours
Learned behaviours- through experience. Classical conditioning, operant conditioning, habituation, and imprinting
Social behaviours
Atomistic behaviour related to conflict. Atruism, mating and courtship, parental care
Communication behaviour
Vocalization, visual signals, chemical signals
Natural Selection
An animal that successfully completes a helpful behaviour survives to pass on the behaviour to offspring
Innate behaviour development
Appear in fully functional form when first performed. Web building, suckling
FAS in cats
Tucked tail, crouched posture, hissing, dilated pupils, ears pinned down to the side
